PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN - DOCUMENT SIGNED 12/05/1949 - HFSID 40782
    RONALD REAGAN
Recovering from a broken coccyx, he signs a 1949 document withdrawing from a Universal film to star in a Warner Bros. movie as a DA determined to prosecute a racist organization.
    Carbon Typed Contract signed:
    "Ronald Reagan"
    in ink, 2 pages, 8½x11.
Universal City, California, 1949 December 5.
Universal Pictures amends an October 26, 1949 contract with Reagan.
    In part:
"In connection with...that certain letter agreement...we consented to the rendition by you of your services in connection with a photoplay to be produced by Franchot Tone (hereinafter referred to as the 'Tone photoplay'), said letter agreement is hereby amended in the following respect...you have advised us that in lieu of rendering your services in connection with the said Tone photoplay...you desire to render your services in connection with that certain photoplay entitled "STORM CENTER" (hereinafter referred to as 'Warner photoplay') to be produced by Warner Brothers Pictures, Inc...that although you have not completely recovered from your recent accident, the present effects thereof and impediments resulting there from will not interfere with the requirements of the particular role that you will portray in the Warner photoplay; and that your physician, because of the limited requirements of said role, is permitting you to render services in connection with the Warner photoplay, and we hereby consent...."
    During the filming of
    The Girl From Jones Beach
for Warner Bros., Reagan tripped and fell, breaking his coccyx (tailbone).
    Storm Center
    was renamed
    Storm Warning
. It starred Ginger Rogers as a New York fashion model who visits her young, newly married sister (played by Doris Day) in a small southern town. Reagan played the role of a District Attorney determined to wipe out the local chapter of a group similar to the Ku Klux Klan.
    Ronald Reagan
    (1911-2004) had two careers:
    actor and politician.
    His first movie was
    Love is on the Air
(1937) and his 53rd and last film was
    The Killers
    (1964).
In 1965, he wrote his autobiography,
    Where's the Rest of Me?
, a line from his role as Drake McHugh in
    King's Row
    (1942).
Reagan left his job hosting television's
    Death Valley Days
during the 1965-1966 season, when he entered politics. Elected
    Governor of California
in 1966, he was reelected in 1970. Reagan began his campaign for the presidency and
narrowly lost the 1976 Republican nomination to Gerald Ford.
    He was
elected President in 1980 and was reelected in 1984. After leaving office in 1989, he wrote his second autobiography,
    An American Life
    .
On February 6, 2001, Reagan became just the third U.S. President to reach the age of 90 and the nation's longest living President until
Gerald Ford (d. 2006) lived 45 days longer. Lightly creased. 2 file holes at upper blank margin. Staple holes at upper left corner. Embossed stamping touches the "R" in Ronald.
