    Description

    William Howard Taft (1857 ? 1930), 27th president of the United States from 1909 to 1913, and Chief Justice of the United States from 1921 to1930. Taft also served as Secretary of War, and Solicitor General from 1890 to 1892 under Benjamin Harrison.
    A Department of Justice typed letter, dated April 8, 1892, signed by William H. Taft, as Solicitor General.
    The letter is written to Calderon Carlisle who was a prominent lawyer in Washington D.C. Calderon served as counsel to the Spanish Embassy and was involved with
    solution to the Bering Sea controversy over seal hunting rights. The controversy was eventually settled by an international court in 1911.
    The letter is folded, and slightly discolored and crimped.
